The Blue Guitar   Q & A EXIT

Q:   Hi there, Loving the Classic 30 and all the while I know I can get way better tone out of it by making a few changes. I've just bought on ebay a Hellatone speaker, (modded G12-H) which I'm sure is gonna make a huge difference. But I'de like to try different preamp tubes, which some of I have around like 12at 12au, etc for the O/D section. But am wondering which tubes to change up as I'm looking at the back of my Classic 30. -- Corey     Corey Lavigne

Q:   Hi Steve, Thank you for all the info.I'm about to have my tech mod my peavey classic 30 combo.Since there is also info on the Crate V33 head here,i was wondering if Orange caps in the peavey would get the tone more open and clear (similar to the Crate V33)
I like the punchier quality of the peavey.
Also it is safe to put the dummy plug in the back of the peavey speaker out without any other mods? Thanks , Ki

Q:   I don't know if it was to you but I've ask this before but didn't get a reply.

Some History - Before I finally got my Peavey Classic 50 410 with ext cab peavey 15" - I was playing around with $60 Ebay SS amps and came across a great sound until it started blowing power trans. I played tele into $40 Gainiac tube preamp chain out to $60 Fender Deluxe 112 Plus and chain out to my $60 Kustom 60 W bass amp. Incredible sound but damage to power transistor in the Kustom Bass amp. I fixed it. I was still looking for that tube sound so I broke down and spent the big money for my buddy's Peavey rig. Love it but miss that huge bass support I was getting from my SS chain.

I would like to find that great bass support from my 15" ext cab without damaging anything.

Question 1. - I guess I could safely mic out to the Kustom bass amp OR Can I isolate amp output in the Peavey 410 sending lows to the 15" ext cab and highs to the 410 by installing caps (?) into the speaker output.

Question 2. Amp too big for my home so - THinking of a Volume Box for the Peavey classic 50 410 to get that great sound without neighbors calling the cops. Do products like THe Volume Box where the amp runs full but controled with the VB stress the amp causing new tubes and trannies. -- Don

Q:   Have you tried changing the Peavey Classic 30 output tubes to cathode bias? Have you tried running the amp on two power tubes? -- Gary     Gary Wright

Q:   I was looking at the Hot Rod Tweed Conversion for SF Bassman Head, and was wondering about the bright switch location?>? On the schematics it shows it on the bottom of V1 but isn't it usually over the volume switch on most early fenders?? I am new to this whole thing and am not doubting the guy that did the schematic but I have never seen it like this?? Thanks a bunch and love this site! -- Matt     Matt

Q:   Thanks for all of the help with modifying my Peavey Classic 30. I am totally new to tube amps and electronics, but I've started digging in thanks to your articles. A few questions:

If I add the bias tester by putting a 1 ohm 2 watt resistor in place of the end jumper how do I wire in the testing jack? Also how would I put it to use? I'm assuming one lead of a tester goes in the jack, the other to ground, but you know what they say about assuming.

Also could you give me the schematic reference numbers for the capacitors and resistors to remove to "fenderize" the input? A little more detail on how to add in the 33K series resistor and the 1M resistor would help out too.

Thanks again for the great info. -John -- John

Q:   Oh and tubes forgot to mention tubes. I installed a JJecc81(12AT7) in V1 an Electro harmonics 12AX7EH in V2 and a JJ12AX7 balanced for the phase inverter in V3.With all the work put into the V33H plus good tubes you'd think it would scream!(but it doesn't?) -- larry     larry s.
